Reading For Vocabulary for YouTube는 미국 교과서 수준의 영어를 원어민 선생님과 한국 선생님의 해설 강의로 재미있고 쉬운 강의로 배울 수 있도록 제작된 프로그램입니다. 기존의 영어 어휘 학습은 주로 단문으로 이루어진 단어책이나 독해를 위한 교재에서 단어 파트 부분을 학습하는 방법이었습니다. Reading For Vocabulary는 이와는 반대로 단어를 중심으로 단어가 사용되는 모습을 가장 잘 나타내주는 문장, 지문, 그리고 주제로 구성되어 있습니다. 원어민 선생님 강의와 더불어 한국어 선생님의 해설 강의로 새로운 방식의 어휘 학습을 경험해 보시기 바랍니다.

💓 Lesson 8 Living with Animals
People have kept animals for thousands of years.
They have many different roles. Dogs and cats make great pets. Cows and horses do work for us. Chickens are used for food. Lions and monkeys aren’t as useful.
We use these kinds of animals for entertainment.
Kings and queens often collected strange animals from far-away lands. Romans made animals fight each other. Imagine five thousand bears and lions fighting to the death! This was fun for the audience, but the animals suffered greatly. These days there are many laws that protect animals. But this doesn’t mean that animals are always treated well.
Many animals are born in zoos. There isn’t always enough space or food for them. So the zoos sell the extra animals. Edith is a chimpanzee who was found in California. She was sold right after her 3rd birthday. For the next 37 years she moved between different zoos. When police found her, she was living in a concrete pit on the side of the road.
Animals make their homes in many different environments. Penguins often live in cold, icy areas. Tigers live in warm, humid jungles. Lions live in wide-open plains. A zoo is in only one environment. It must build special environments for its animals. These environments are expensive to make and to maintain. They are not always perfect. Animals that are kept in poor conditions, like Edith, often go crazy.
Modern zoos try to educate as well as to entertain. Animals’ homes are destroyed by humans every day. If people understand how important animals are to the world, then we will try harder to protect them. Zoos aren’t perfect, but maybe they can teach us how to live better together.
