The Vocal Range of Kate Bush

A video showcasing the amazing voice and vocal range of Kate Bush! Kate is evidently a soprano, with an instantly identifiable voice (in part, due to her singing in a distinct southern English accent) perfectly matching her unique music. In her early years, Kate sang in a very piercing, almost witchy styling, turning some listeners off her music. She had noticeable strength in her upper register, frequently reaching into the fifth and even sixth octaves with ease on albums like The Kick Inside and Lionheart. Further down the line, most notably in Hounds of Love and then The Sensual World, Kate's tone mellowed out significantly. Though still a distinct soprano with ease in her upper register, the rough edges of Kate's voice had been smoothed out, with Kate more frequently dipping into the third octave and singing much cleaner high notes. Over time, Kate's voice (most likely due to age or years of smoking) has changed even further - on her most recent works 50 Words for Snow and Before the Dawn, she sings even more frequently in the lower register of her voice, in a stark contrast to her singing on The Kick Inside. However, with eccentric, vivacious vocal performances across her career (Get Out of My House, Rocket's Tail, Violin) a fairly strong lower register which grew stronger over time (The Dreaming, Running Up That Hill) and an exceptionally strong head voice, particularly in her early years (Moving, Oh to Be in Love, Wow), Kate's voice still stands in music as one of the greatest of all time.
