Indian author, lawyer, and activist Banu Mushtaq has made history by winning the 2025 International Booker Prize for her Kannada short story collection Heart Lamp, translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi. This landmark achievement marks the first time a work in Kannada—and the first short story collection—has received this prestigious award.

Born in 1948 in Karnataka, Mushtaq has long been a formidable voice for women's rights and social justice. Her 12-story collection, written over three decades (1990–2023), vividly portrays the lives of Muslim women navigating patriarchy, caste, and faith in southern India. Drawing from her experiences as a lawyer and activist, Mushtaq's narratives are deeply rooted in the Bandaya Sahitya (protest literature) movement.

Translator Deepa Bhasthi, who curated and translatoed the collection, described her approach as “translating with an accent,” preserving the multilingual essence of the original Kannada, including Urdu and Arabic phrases. Her work was recognized with the PEN Translates Award in 2024.

The £50,000 prize is shared equally between Mushtaq and Bhasthi. Judges praised Heart Lamp as “something genuinely new for English readers,” highlighting its emotional depth and cultural richness.

Heart Lamp is published by And Other Stories in the UK and Penguin Random House India. The book's global recognition underscores the power of regional literature and the importance of translation in amplifying diverse voices.
