REPACKING FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS • CLASS A Motorhome, F53 Chassis

Why I'm not not repacking my front wheel bearings & greasing the brake caliper slide bolts on our Ford F53 Chassis, Class A, Gas Motorhome.

Ford recommends that front wheel bearings on a F53 chassis should be repacked every 4yrs. or 60K miles. Our coach is inching towards 40K miles but it’s 9 years old & the last couple of years this PM item has really been on my mind. Grease—over time—can break down and as it ages it can also cake up.

Ford’s recommends 30,000 mile service is only for slow, local, delivery, delivery truck use or 4 x 2 trucks.
The caliper mounting slide bolts are 15/16" (24mm) & Ford uses blue Loctite on top of 295' lbs. of torque.

Even for me—Mr. RVstreet Himself—who does all my own RV maintenance & upgrades. After accessing all what it would take to do this job myself—including the time—I just decided to take it to a shop. Paying someone else sometimes is just part of full timing in an RV and especially for a job like this when you don’t have the tools & other necessary equipment to start with. So I budgeted for this job to be done by an outside source.

HOW I PICKED JAMAIL’S TO DO THIS WORK:
In 2020, I wanted to have my front end alignment checked. This again is something I can’t do. So by doing some research I found Jamail’s Auto & Truck Services in the north Houston, TX area. They mainly service heavy, light duty trucks and Fleet Services which also includes motorhomes. So I made an appointment. The owner (Roy) met me and took the coach right in. During the time it was being checked, I walked around and then inquired more about what they did there, saw many of the big rigs that were being serviced, the number of bays they had and so on. After about an hour he drove our motorhome back out and said, “your alignment is perfect”, no charge. I didn’t perform any work so I’m not charging you. I was shocked. No shop does that these days. I knew then that this was a shop I could trust and I wanted to keep them on my list of possible shops that I may need in the future to use or recommend to others. So when I was in RGV for the winter contemplating doing this bearing job myself, I decided I just wanted to take our coach back to them and let them do this bearing repack job and also grease the brake caliper slide bolts. So since we were going right near Houston, TX anyway in about a month, I made an appointment. Very happy with their work and a great family owned business.
