The FLAWED Car Of A Champion

1994 Italy, Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Williams FW16, Ayrton Senna.
The Williams FW16, engineered following the 1994 FIA ban on active suspension and electronic traction aids, exhibited extreme aerodynamic sensitivity and a narrow longitudinal operating window. Lead designer Adrian Newey identified that the high-frequency floor-bottoming and stall characteristics made the chassis "aerodynamically unstable" at the limit. On May 1, 1994, during the San Marino Grand Prix, a failure in the modified steering column—repositioned to improve cockpit ergonomics—occurred at Tamburello corner, resulting in a 211 km/h impact. The subsequent legal proceedings focused on structural fatigue and the "shambolic" design of the steering modification, marking a turning point in Formula 1 safety engineering and survival-cell integrity.
