My $42,999.92 Credit Card Debt

Unfortunately, many Americans encourage their children to build their credit scores by opening and using a credit card. Sadly, the risks are not often communicated. At it's highest point I had $42,999.92 in credit card debt, that felt impossible to pay off. This was accumulated over an extended period of time. I couldn't even tell you exactly what I bought, but I can tell you how much shame and sadness it caused me. The debt impacted my emotional and physical well being on many levels.

For many years I used credit cards to supplement my low income by using them to pay for groceries, gas, clothes, rent and more! Once my income increased, I simply paid the minimum balance, and continued to use them for meals out etc. The balance just seemed like it'd never go away. It stressed me out, but my friends and family all seemed to think it was normal, and not something to worry about.

You may think you have your credit cards under control, but unexpected things happen in life, and you may end up carrying a balance. With world events being what they are, this is the time to re-evaluate your financial situation and commit to change, if you don't like what you see. Paying off your credit cards will help stabilize your finances and reduce your exposure to nasty debt collectors.

In order to get out of credit card debt, you first have to get disgusted with it. Commit to paying off your credit card debt. Cut expenses, and pay as much as you can towards your debt. You can do this! It's time to decide to live differently. Save up and pay for the things you need and want. If you don't have the money to buy it, don't buy it. Let's make credit cards (and credit scores!) a thing of the past. If we all stop borrowing money, there's no need to worry about building a credit score. Simple as that.
