I've probably replayed this game more times than any other game ever. For me it's one of those games you can pick up anytime and play for hours without ever getting bored. I decided I'd playthrough it in 2026 for YouTube! Enjoy!

Red Faction Guerrilla by all means was meant to go down as one of the biggest games of all time. It was meant to be a game that changed the entire gaming industry, making destructible environments like this the standard for every game, but instead it got ridiculously unlucky. It was overshadowed by bigger games of its time when it was released in 2009, and later misunderstood by modern gamers who commonly call the game brokenly hard and bad without understanding how it's meant to be played.

The main misunderstanding comes from the combat. Most players approach the game like a typical open world shooter like Just Cause where you can run around in the middle of a battlefield, tank damage, and win fights pretty easily. But Red Faction Guerrilla wasn't designed to work like that. The combat is built around guerrilla tactics. That means positioning, planning, and adapting to what's going on around you is VERY important.

The game punishes reckless play almost immediately. If you stand out in the open without a plan, the EDF will DESTROY you in seconds. Modern players often interpret this as bad balancing or “broken difficulty,” when in reality you're meant to use cover and think strategically.

What makes the combat system so unique is that the battlefield never stays the same. Taking cover is VITAL to winning, yet all cover can be 100% destroyed. This forces you to constantly reassess your situation and create new plans on the fly. Meanwhile in most shooters, cover is permanent and predictable.

That’s where the genius of the combat comes from. The key to winning fights isn’t simply shooting better than the enemy, it’s maintaining control while everything around you is falling apart. You need to think about where the enemy will move, how your environment might change, and how you can use destruction itself as a weapon.

Players who expect an arcade shooter often ignore these systems, get overwhelmed by the difficulty, and assume the combat is poorly designed. In reality, the opposite is true. The combat is deliberately harsh because it’s meant to simulate being an outnumbered insurgent fighting a stronger military force. Once you understand that mindset and start approaching fights strategically, the combat goes from frustrating to incredibly satisfying.

The common misinterpretation of the combat is what I consider to be the main reason why so many people misunderstand and hate on the game. They play it like a typical run-and-gun shooter when it’s actually designed around methodical guerrilla warfare in a fully destructible environment. If you approach it the right way, the combat isn’t broken at all. It’s one of the most unique and brilliant combat systems ever put into an open world shooter.
