But the earliest feminists were often unrecognised in their own lifetimes. Worse still, they were sometimes attacked for their progressive views, dismissed as mad or ‘unfeminine’. But though they must have felt like they were fighting an impossible battle, they carried on, and we have them to thank for the progress that has been made over the decades and centuries.
