What does the Algerian youth dream of after the Revolution of Smiles in 2019?

Every week since February 2019, millions of Algerian people are walking against the Algerian authorities. An unprecedented movement which has shaken a nation that didn’t believe in itself anymore. This documentary puts the light on how five young Algerians fight for their freedom. By telling us about their fight, they took insane risks in order to told their stories, to told us about their country. Despite the repressive measures against the hirak movement, the authoritative and military system that rules Algeria since its independence, has not consumed yet this popular and pacific movement.

While Bouteflika has been removed from power, the situation in Algeria has hardly changed despite the hopes for change and freedom. Algeria remains a country without prospects for Algerian youth, who have fought for a better future in their country. Won over by disillusionment and despair, some decide to leave for Europe to guarantee a better future. But embarked on boats of fortune some will never reach the European coasts.
Through the testimonies of young Algerians, this excerpt exposes an Algerian youth that is both desperate and hopeful that the change brought about by the Hirak will take shape. A youth thus divided, between those who no longer see any prospects in a country blocked by a regime in crisis of legitimacy, and the others who prefer to stay and continue to fight for the rebuilding of democracy in the country. The pandemic has dealt a blow to the Hirak movement, preventing them from taking their demands to the streets as they did during the Smiles Revolution in 2019.
