Don’t identify minerals by color! Lepidolite - Mini Geology Lesson #shorts

Identifying minerals by color is one of the most common mistakes beginners make.

This is lepidolite — a lithium-rich mica that can appear purple, yellow, gray, or mauve. What actually matters for mineral identification isn’t color, but characteristics like crystal structure, Mohs hardness, luster, streak, specific gravity and cleavage.

Lepidolite belongs to the mica group and forms in layered crystals that split cleanly in one direction. This property, called cleavage, reflects how atoms are bonded inside the crystal and is one of the most important tools geologists use to identify minerals accurately.

Accurate mineral ID isn’t achieved by guessing from a photo based on color. It’s done through process of elimination by examining structural properties.
