मंदिर के एक पुजारी ने मंदिर के इतिहास के बारे में उल्लेख किया कि बहुत समय पहले एक मामड़िया चारण नाम का एक चारण था , जिनके कोई 'बेटा-बेटी' अर्थात कोई संतान नहीं थी , वह संतान प्राप्ति के लिए लगभग सात बार हिंगलाज माता की पूरी पैदल यात्रा की। एक रात को जब उस चारण (गढवी )को स्वप्न में आकर माता ने पूछा कि तुम्हें बेटा चाहिए या बेटी , तो चारण ने कहा कि आप ही मेरे घर पर जन्म ले लो। हिंगलाज माता की कृपा से उस चारण के घर पर सात पुत्रियों और एक पुत्र ने जन्म लिया। इनमें से एक आवड मा थी जिनको तनोट माता के नाम से जाना जाता है।
तनोट माँ (तन्नोट माँ) का मन्दिर जैसलमेर जिले से लगभग एक सौ तीस कि॰मी॰ की दूरी पर स्थित हैं। तनोट राय को हिंगलाज माँ का ही एक रूप कहा हैं , हिंगलाज माता जो वर्तमान में बलूचिस्तान जो पाकिस्तान में है , वहाँ स्थापित है। भाटी राजपूत नरेश तणुराव ने वि॰सं॰ 828 में तनोट का मंदिर बनवाकर मूर्ति को स्थापित कि थी। इसी बीच भाटी तथा जैसलमेर के पड़ौसी इलाकों के लोग आज भी पूजते आ रहे हैं।
माना गया है कि भारत और पाकिस्तान के मध्य जो सितम्बर 1965 को लड़ाई हुई थी , उसमें पाकिस्तान के सैनिकों ने मंदिर पर कई बम गिराए थे लेकिन माँ की कृपा से एक भी बम नहीं फट सका था। तभी से सीमा सुरक्षा बल के जवान काफी श्रद्धा भाव रखते हैं।

The BSF has also established a museum near the temple that tells the glory of this temple associated with the Indian Army.
Another reason to visit this old temple is the incredulous road which connects it with Jaisalmer. According to the visitors, the route is brimming with the vistas brimming with beautiful landscapes.
You will witness beautiful landscapes that are dotted with yellow sand dunes, camels, goats, camps, and local people in colourful Rajasthani clothes, dhabas serving delectable food, and spectacular wind mills.
Once you reach the temple, you will be mesmerized with the divinity and purity of the temple. There is a unique aura surrounding its premises, which often turns the non-believer of the divine power into a devotee.
There have been a lot of anecdotes where people visited this place as tourists but the uniqueness of this temple left them mesmerized. There have been many instances of divine intervention in and around this temple as well. No wonder many people re-visit this temple quite often.
