Emraan Hashmi in the film Zeher 2005: The character of a cop who is in charge of a small town police station in Goa. He’s not your typical Hindi film writer’s cop — the kind who does everything right and never takes bribes. It’s not that he’s a bad person; in fact, there’s no bribery angle in the film at all. But he has flaws of his own, just like all of us. He makes mistakes, and he repents for them.

A very important trait of this character, which forms the basis of the film, is that he is a traditional Indian male chauvinist. It’s relevant because many of us, especially men, may believe we are modern. We may wear T-shirts and jeans, live in a metropolitan city like Mumbai, yet still believe that a woman’s domain is the home — that she should take care of the house, have children, and look after them, while men go out and earn money for the family.

But all of that is changing now. Women are stepping into workplaces, building careers, and making names for themselves. That becomes the central point of conflict in our film. It creates a rift in the relationship between the man and the woman.

Throughout the story, he remains a man in constant turmoil, grieving over his broken marriage. In the middle of that emotional chaos, there is an illicit relationship with another woman. That is when things begin to spiral out of control. A murder takes place, and the film suddenly shifts gears into a gripping rollercoaster ride of crime and thriller.
