Hello everyone! Welcome to Science with Divya. Today we are going to explore a very interesting concept — how turmeric acts as a natural indicator to identify whether a solution is acidic or basic.

What is an Indicator?
An indicator is a substance that changes its color when added to acids or bases. It helps us identify the nature of a solution.

About Turmeric:
Turmeric is a natural substance obtained from the root of the turmeric plant. It contains a chemical compound called curcumin, which is responsible for its yellow color and indicator properties.

Experiment Demonstration:
👉 Take a piece of paper or cloth and apply turmeric paste on it. Let it dry.
👉 Now take two solutions:
Lemon juice (acidic)
Soap solution (basic)
👉 Dip the turmeric paper into both solutions one by one.

Observation:
In acidic solution (like lemon juice) → Turmeric remains yellow
In basic solution (like soap or detergent) → Turmeric turns reddish-brown

Conclusion:
So, turmeric does not change color in acids, but it changes to reddish-brown in bases.
This means turmeric is a natural indicator for bases.

Scientific Reason:
The compound curcumin reacts with basic substances and undergoes a chemical change, which results in the color change.

Real-Life Application:
Even if turmeric stains your clothes and you wash them with soap, you might notice a reddish color — that’s because soap is basic
