Ed Nightingale goes through his "woke" terms of internalized homophobia, misogyny, sexual identity, and a slew of other words that have 0 to do with Kanji, the others characters, their arcs, and storyline of Persona 4 Golden. He even accuses Kanji's friends of either being these negative terms, or not giving Kanji any pushback when he admits "Girls are so loud and obnoxious, so, y'know...I really don't like dealing with 'em."

Then there're Shadow selves, the dark, twisted, exaggerated versions of the main characters, not to be taken literally. They're symbolic of that characters inner struggle made manifest. But hey identity politics people, keep inventing that headcanon, and we'll keep criticizing.
