While the passport book renewal fees have risen from $110 to $130, the cost for a new passport book has increased 14%, from $145 to $165, for adults above the age of 16. In comparison, the passport books fee for children below 16 will rise from $115 to $135, a 17% bump.

According to the State Department website, the completion time for standard passport renewal could be about 11 weeks. For an additional $60, an expedited renewal application can have a turnaround time of 7 weeks.

Passport renewals are being processed much faster than last summer when travelers had to wait about 18 weeks to renew their passports. However, the processing duration is much longer than before the pandemic, when 6 to 8 weeks was the norm for standard service. During the period before the pandemic, if you paid for the expedited service, you could even get your little blue book in as little as 2 weeks.

But not to fret, very soon, the processing time should improve as it as online renewal of passports would be available soon.
