The Lowest Worker Share Since 1947: What Your Salary Hides
Since 1947, workers have never taken home a smaller share of what they help produce.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics published in May 2026 that the labor share fell to 54.1% in the first quarter of the year, the lowest value in nearly 80 years of measurement. In 1947, that share was 70%. Workers are producing more per hour worked and receiving proportionally less.
The Indeed Hiring Lab called this the utilization squeeze: companies extracting more from existing employees without hiring, without raising pay, before reaching the limit of what people can give. Part of this productivity growth is being driven by AI. But the value AI generates is not reaching the people who use the tool. It is going to investors and shareholders.
The data is American. The dynamic is global. And the question it raises is not economic. It is personal: do you know what you deliver versus what you receive?
