Fantastic Ordinals and How to Avoid Them: Auto-Scaling Challenges in a Cloud Database - Manish Gill, ClickHouse Inc

Running a cloud database on kubernetes brings interesting scaling challenges, particularly with StatefulSets. While the vanilla StatefulSet is a great starting point, it has limitations when it comes to scaling. This talk discusses different models of scaling - Break-first and Make-first. You will understand the Pros and Cons of both of these models and which to use when. We then focus on the challenges that prevent doing Make-first with traditional StatefulSets. We discuss open source projects such as Advanced StatefulSets and OpenKruise that enable Make-first scaling. Lastly, the talk discusses a case study for a hybrid, Multi-StatefulSet approach to Make-first scaling in ClickHouse Cloud.
