Why Hawaii People are Usually Late (Hawaiian Time Explained)

One of the first things you'll notice when you come to Hawaii is that a lot of people are usually late to things. If you plan to meet a friend for lunch at 11:30 am, expect your friend to arrive at 11:40 am. We call it "Hawaiian Time", which is a casual way of excusing people for arriving late for things or for things starting later than expected.

I never noticed this part of Hawaii's culture until I went to Japan and realized that things run on time in Japan and it's nice. The trains and buses are on time. Stores open and close on time. In Hawaii, however, things usually happen within a 10-15 minute window. And I've always wondered why that's a part of the local Hawaii culture.

What do you think about Hawaiian Time? Do you embrace it? Does it bother you? Let me know in the comments.

Note: In this video, I use "Hawaii Time" instead of the traditional "Hawaiian Time", but I use the terms interchangeably.
