BLUE ECONOMY:FG Boosts Waterway Safety in Taraba with Life Jacket Distribution Drive
The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, in collaboration with the Taraba State Government, has handed over life jackets to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital.
This is part of ongoing efforts to enhance safety across Nigeria’s waterways.
The distribution exercise is expected to significantly improve the safety of thousands who rely on the Benue, Donga, and Taraba rivers for daily transportation and economic activities.
Representing the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, at the handover ceremony was the Director of Marine Conservation, Innovation and Technology, Mr Hussieni Shettima. He reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting secure inland water travel.
He expressed confidence that the combined efforts of federal and state agencies would yield real, life-saving benefits for riverine communities in Taraba State.
According to Shettima, the long-term success of the initiative depends on consistent use of the life jackets by local communities, sustained public awareness campaigns, and strong enforcement of safety regulations.
With inland waterways serving as a lifeline for transportation and commerce in Taraba State, the provision of safety equipment such as life jackets is considered a crucial intervention. The initiative is projected to reduce the incidence of waterway accidents and save lives, particularly in remote and riverine areas.
Taraba is one of several states visited under this nationwide initiative. Others include Niger, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Delta, and Kwara.
