Warning: 3 things I wish I learned sooner… (music career, growth)

1. The importance of upskilling in areas outside of your craft (whether that be in networking, finances, marketing, project management etc.).

A lot of the skills you’ve gained from learning music can actually TRANSLATE into other non-music skills to elevate your career — more than you know. These skills will broaden the range of opportunities that can become available to you. Invest in mentors, learn about the stories of other people, read, do whatever you can and the world will open up for you.

2. Nervous system management.

Several factors can affect this: environment, internal self talk, time you schedule intentionally to just PLAY (and no not music, I mean really just play - whatever makes you happy outside of music and makes your inner child happy. It’s easy to say “just take care of yourself,” but instead, a better question might be, “what does your nervous system need right now?”
When seasons get busy and expectations seem to compound on you, it’s easy to forget that breaks are NECESSARY. Your focus will actually improve after regular resets. Listen to your nervous system before physical issues begin to manifest and never be afraid to ask for help. This goes for any career.

3. It’s okay to not have it figured out right now!

Everyone is winging it and that is the beauty of paving a path for yourself no matter what career you are stepping into. Each person’s experiences are unique and trust that with every step forward, the view will get clearer. But what’s important is to make those steps.
