Hambir was the 49th monarch of the Malla dynasty, which thrived about 1586 AD and governed in the 16th-17th centuries, and was a contemporary of Mughal emperor Akbar. He fought alongside Akbar against the Afghans and gave a yearly tribute to the Mughal administrators of Bengal, recognising their suzerainty.

Bir Hambir was a devout guy who converted to Vaishnavism. A narrative in two Vaishnava writings (Prem-vilasa of Nityananda Das (alias Balaram Das) and Bhakti Ratnakara of Narahari Chakrabarti) describes how Srinivasa and other devotees were robbed by Bir Hambir while travelling from Vrindavan to Gaur with a number of Vaishanava manuscripts. 

Bir Hambir, on the other hand, was so touched by Srinivasa's reading of Bhagavata that he converted to Vaishnavism and bestowed a large gift of land and money on Srinivasa. He brought Madan Mohan devotion to Bishnupur.

During the Pathan administration of Soleiman Karrani in Gaur, the kingdom of Bishnupur enjoyed unparalleled[citation needed] splendour in Bengal's Rarh area. Daud Khan Karrani, his impulsive son, fantasised about capturing all of Bengal. In this circumstance, Daud Khan invaded Bishnupur with a big number of Pathan forces in 1575 AD. "Dawood Khan suddenly appeared and tented in a place named Ranisagar near Bishnupur with more than one lakh warriors and equivalent ammunition," recounts Revered Fakir Narayan Karmakar Mahasaya. [6]

The surprise onslaught of Dawood Khan's army of lakhs embarrassed the residents of Ranisagar. The army of Bishnupur was still not prepared for fight. At this point, Hambir Malla, the valiant ruler of Bishnupur, launched the battle by equipping the troops.

Intoxicated by the fantasy of triumph, the army of Bishnupur proceeded to defeat the adversary by worshipping Maa Mrinmayee, the kuladevi of Mallabhum.

Bishnupur possessed a total of twelve forts, one of which being the Mundmal fort. The Mallabhum army assaulted the Pathan soldiers near Mundmal Garh. Following a furious struggle between the two sides, Hambir Malla destroyed the Pathan troops in such a sad fashion that the ground near the fort's eastern entrance was littered with Pathan soldiers'
bodies. Dawood Khan was apprehended and imprisoned. In a condition of siege, he awaited death. But the noble Hambir negotiated for his release and escorted him to safety.

"There were so many bodies of the deceased Nawab's men near the fort's eastern entrance that it was named Mundmalaghat."

According to legend, Hambir Malla chopped off the heads of the invading Pathan troops, created a garland (mundamala), and presented it to the demon-destroying Maa Mrinmayidevi as a gift. For completing such tough undertaking, he was given the title "Bir Hambir."
