Ophelia

Ophelia's Drowning in Shakespeare's Hamlet

Ophelia is a character from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. She is the daughter of Polonius and the sister of Laertes. Ophelia becomes mad after the death of her father, Polonius, who is killed by Hamlet, her lover. Her tragic fate culminates in her drowning.

Ophelia's drowning is not depicted on stage but is described by Queen Gertrude in Act IV, Scene VII. Gertrude recounts how Ophelia, while gathering flowers, slips and falls into a brook. In her madness, she sings as she floats, seemingly unaware of her impending death. Her clothing, initially buoyant, eventually becomes waterlogged, pulling her under.
