Flat Roof Rule: When We Always Install a Base Sheet

Before we install any flat roof system, the first question we ask is simple:

Does this need a base sheet?

Here’s the rule of thumb we follow in Arizona:
• If it’s over a living area (bedroom, living room, etc.) — it gets a base sheet.
• If there’s drywall underneath — it gets a base sheet.
• If the roof has parapet walls on three or more sides — it gets a base sheet.

Why?
Because drainage matters.
If water doesn’t have an easy exit, it can pond. And once water starts pooling, you’re increasing the risk of leaks, underlayment deterioration, and interior damage.
Flat roofs don’t typically fail because of the coating.
They fail because of poor drainage and inadequate reinforcement.
If there’s any chance water can sit — we reinforce it properly.
