Madras Lane Petaling Street is a narrow alleyway that’s known for its tasty hawker fare, as well as a wet market that sells a variety of produce, meat, poultry and fish. Set within Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, it’s connected to the Petaling Street Flea Market(茨厂街） via a Chinese-style archway bearing the name Penjaja Gallery （李霖泰菜市场）. Locals frequently refer to the hawker street as Madras Lane（中华巷） after a cinema of the same name, which was destroyed in a fire during the late 1970s.

The food at Madras Lane Petaling Street is predominantly Chinese, with curry laksa and yong tau foo being the most popular options among local diners. The former is a mix of noodles, long beans, eggplants, cockles, deep-fried tofu and pork rind, served in a spicy broth that’s made with coconut milk and curry.

There are several stalls selling asam laksa (Nyonya noodles in spicy and tangy fish soup), so we suggest picking the one that’s busiest if you’re not pressed for time.
