Accumulators (Full Lecture)

In this lesson we'll examine an extremely handy peripheral hydraulic component known as an accumulator. Accumulators perform numerous important functions in a hydraulic system including but not limited to: maintaining system pressure when several components activate at the same time, developing fluid flow, compensating for thermal expansion and contraction, controlling noise, absorbing shocks, maintaining pressure in the event of pump failure allowing the orderly shutdown of a system, smoothing pump pulsations, and compensating for fluid leakage.

Additionally, we'll examine several hydraulic circuits making use of accumulators, the means to bleed or discharge accumulators, the construction of weighted and spring loaded mechanical accumulators, the different types of hydro-pneumatic or gas charged accumulators (piston, diaphragm, and bladder), and briefly discuss precharge and its influence on the available quantity of pressurized fluid. Finally, we'll discuss sizing accumulators and failure modes common to hydro-pneumatic accumulators. (Full Lecture)
