1986 Nissan 300zx Review

My thoughts on the 1986 Nissan 300zx with a turbo charged 3.0L V6 and 5 speed manual transmission:

V6’s and turbo chargers are a match I didn’t know I needed. In the past, I’ve mostly dealt with four-cylinder turbo cars. The problem with 4 banger turbos is that before the turbo spools, the engine feels gutless. Sure the Focus ST is quick, but that’s only after the turbo kicks in way later in the rev range. That being said, 4 banger turbos are just as boring at slow speeds as a Kia Rio, or Nissan versa. A v6 turbo eliminates that. V6’s have more torque than 4 cylinders, allowing the V6’s to still pull hard while out of boost. So when the v6 and turbo start working together, especially this 57mm turbo, magic happens and pavement gets shredded. You want to eliminate turbo lag? Add more cylinders.

The interior of the 300zx is interesting. It’s sporty, but luxurious. The seats are adjustable in about 9,000 different ways, the dash tells you what you need to know, and the T-tops are there for those cook-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk days. It really is an interesting mix of sporty and comfort. Surprisingly, it works quite well.

I don’t want to dwell on the interior. To be honest it was cool, But I couldn’t care less. It all came town to that five letter word: Turbo. Now let’s be clear. The car I drove was a NA car that had a turbo put on it, rather than the factory turbo model. That being said, I think about it all the time. I think about the 300zx’s 80’s style, but enough power to keep up with today’s cars. There was no feeling of “Well it was fast for its time” like in my Rx7. It’s Just fast. Period.
