Israel intercepts Gaza-bound aid flotilla, detains activists at sea

stopping nearly 20 vessels out of a convoy of around 60 ships and detaining close to 100 activists.

The flotilla, which set sail from Türkiye, was stopped in international waters near Cyprus, according to organizers. Israel’s foreign ministry described the mission as a “provocation,” while activists insist it was a peaceful humanitarian effort aimed at delivering aid to Gaza.

On the ground, Palestinians in Gaza continue to face severe shortages of food, fuel, medicine, and other essential supplies amid Israel’s ongoing blockade, which has been in place since 2007. Aid groups warn that conditions remain catastrophic despite claims that deliveries are reaching the enclave.

For many in Gaza, the flotilla represents a symbolic act of solidarity, even if it is unlikely to immediately change conditions on the ground.

Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum reports from Gaza City on what the interception means for Palestinians living under blockade.
