Teli Ka Mandir, Gwalior
Teli Ka Mandir is one of the oldest standing temples inside Gwalior Fort, built around the 8th–9th century CE during the Gurjara-Pratihara period.
The temple is unique because it does not follow the typical North Indian (Nagara) temple style.
Its tall, rectangular tower looks more like a South Indian gopuram, making it one of the rare fusion-style temples in India.
The name “Teli” is believed to come from the oil-merchant (Teli) community, who may have helped fund or maintain the temple.
The temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and its walls still show carvings of Garuda, river goddesses, and mythological figures.
Teli Ka Mandir proves that Indian architecture was already experimenting and evolving more than 1,200 years ago.
