A few weeks ago, I filmed a commemoration of The Baltic Way in Chicago. This year marks the 35th anniversary of when the three Baltic nations stood holding hands to create a human chain. The Chain of Freedom was a peaceful political demonstration that took place on August 23, 1989. Approximately two million people joined hands to form a human chain spanning 690 kilometers (430 miles) across the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which were then occupied and annexed by the USSR and had a combined population of around eight million. The central government in Moscow considered the three Baltic countries to be constituent republics of the Soviet Union. #balticstates #balticulture #lithuanian #latvian #estonian #chicago
