The Impulse To Turn Away. The Need For Collective Healing
This is such a poignant phenomenon to point to, and a fierce and needed invitation to call people into. Thank you for it jalachantelle
I wholeheartedly agree with this, and am gonna “yes and” it.
People wanting to protect their peace is a real thing. And for some it does come from entitlement, a kind of cushy ‘fuck you’ to what’s going on in the world that privilege can afford.
I’d also say that there’s a large number of people who turn to coping mechanisms like pushing away, turning away, apathy, or ambivalence not because they don’t care, but because they don’t know how to care.
They don’t know how to work with everything they’re witnessing and feeling in a way that’s generative or constructive.
This age of awareness is brand new to us. We’re all figuring it out in real time. Whether it’s the horrific scary news itself, or navigating people’s passionate political views to get each other to act, or the constant push and pull of the internet and media landscape more generally. People don’t know how to work with everything they’re seeing and so some push away.
If your impulse is to turn away, but you want to care, there are tools that can support you to do so.
