White Sands National Park - Exploring New Mexico
White Sand National Park is located in southern New Mexico, just outside the town of Alamogordo and encompasses a huge portion of the world's largest gypsum dunefield (which covers 275 square miles). Along the Park's single 8-mile road, you'll find three short trails with interpretive signage that let you easily explore the landscape and one longer (5-mile) trail if you are up for a bit more adventure. There are also picnic areas and 10 backcountry sites for overnight camping. These sites are located along a 2-mile trail and require a permit. Sledding is also a popular activity and saucer sleds are rumored to be the best. You can pretty much cover it all in a day, or two at most.
The park is located next to White Sand Missile Range, and when testing is in progress the road into the park and the backcountry sites are closed, so you'll want to check the Park website for closure information when planning your visit. https://www.nps.gov/whsa/index.htm The Park brochure says closures average twice a week and usually last one or two hours.
The dunes are beautiful, but the weather can be brutal. Sun, wind, lightening, heat - there is no shortage of things to get you in trouble, so come prepared and explore responsibly.
Note that there is no water to be found inside the park, so be sure to pack what you need and/or fill up at the Visitor's Center on the way in. We planned our visit for early May to avoid the extreme summer heat.

Learning to Travel, is a travel video & social media company formed by Joyce & Daryle Dickens to help others identify and realize their dreams of “traveling more”. After years of “traveling more” talk with too little action, we finally went all-in on a life-changing 14-month journey to 23 countries and 23 US states. Since then, we’ve heard far too many people say “I wish I could do that” which has made us realize that most people need a little push to believe their travel dreams are possible and a little guidance to turn those dreams into reality. That inspiration and guidance is what https://LearningToTravel.com is all about.
