1960 Fender Jazz Bass Stack Knob Restoration Retrospective Re-fret & Pickup Rewinds Mark Grant

1960 Fender Jazz Bass Stack Knob (1st year) came in for some restoration work. Both pickups were incorrectly wound back in the late 60’s and the bridge pickup was dead. The decision was made to rewind both pickups with USA made vintage spec Heavy Formvar magnet wire. There were several heavily worn electrical connections that were cleaned up. The neck pickup lead wires were incorrectly hooked up at the pickup back in the late 60’s. Instead of fixing it correctly at the pickup the hack tech flipped the wires on the neck volume pot. That was fixed as well. The original frets were worn nearly down to the fingerboard and were replaced with pre cbs spec fret wire. A new bone nut was crafted and it received a set up.

The audio track on this video is a tribute to Too Short. Both he and this Jazz Bass came from Oakland CA. All of the bass tracks were recorded with this bass plugged into a vintage Universal Audio LA-610 tube pre amp and compressor. All of the instruments were recorded by Mark Grant at Sam Alley Studio. The song is a cover of Too Short’s 1996 smash hit Gettin’ It.
