Conserving Crivelli's Saint George Slaying the Dragon

How do you help a painting made more than 500 years ago look its best? Chief Conservator Gianfranco Pocobene and Assistant Curator Nathaniel Silver show how careful study of the materials and techniques used by artists help them learn about and care for the collection.

Before beginning his restoration, Pocobene studied the painting in detail. Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) was one method used to study Saint George. By shining a light source on the painting at an angle, it reveals raised areas called pastiglia.
