OBSCURA | Solaris | Full Guitar Cover | New Song

Attention bands: If you don't want me covering your songs within a few days, stop releasing them on weekends. That's the only part of the week where I have time for this haha

For my own sanity and to get it done this weekend (song just came out 2 days ago) I decided to record it in seperate takes. A lot of people seem to do this for the solos, so why can't I do that, right?

So I kind of regret doing this video, because this was a full weekend wasted. Playing-wise it's on the low-bar of what I'd usually release but it's almost a 24h challenge and nowadays, if I can't do something like this in a weekend I won't do it at all! Which basically meant a day of practice was all I would give myself. If you ask why I do that, then the answer is that I don't want to spend too much time on something like this. It's still a cool challenge and to see if I still can learn something relatively fast. The problem was that once I started I couldn't stop lol. I didn't plan on doing it when I first heard the song. But it was quite technical, and I just wanted to figure out how technical. I transcribed the intro, made a short video for instagram and that was actually all I wanted to learn and release. But my stupid ego wanted to know about the rest though. And once I started transcribing the rest I also planned the video. Though it still almost didn't happen. I didn't think I could record it today.

So here's why:

I started yesterday at 7:00 AM and apart from two short "breaks" I played until 7:00 PM. Those breaks were just a short apartment cleaning and other chores break and then 30 minutes of video games. So that's almost 12 hours and no I'm not boasting here, it's the opposite, it's stupid. But it fits into that whole topic of "healthy" playing and I had to manage fatigue all day. That's why I didn't think I could record today. My fingers were really shot and I was sure I'd have issues with inflammation today. But to my surprise, the opposite happened. I was pretty fit in the morning and was still able to play it. Usually when I learn and play something with a bit of stress I tend to forget half of the song the next day. Happens with every Spawn Of Possession song basically. Didn't happen this time. I still spend a few hours recording though. I was pretty fatigued when I was recording the solo which is apparent I think. (I totally didn't hit that timing in that one phrase lol)

And yeah it's not my best performance and if this was just a regular song, that wasn't just released I either would've dropped it or spend some time cleaning it up. Main issues are the song structure, so a lot of different parts and then a lot of those tapped arpeggios combined with the ultra fast arpeggios in that one part. Yeah you know which one I mean.

Before I'll share some criticism let me start that I had a great first impression of the "old" team. It immediately sounded like old-school Obscura. The guitar work is also great but also my biggest issue.

I don't want to dive into that too much because it would be disrespectful to bash the song you're honoring with a video like this. (I'm serious) To keep it short I don't particularly like that's it's sort of over-the-top technical. Obscura were always pretty good on the whole tasty techiness that didn't have to rely on sheer speed. Here it's the opposite. And I do think that they either won't play the song live or that they'll re-arrange those ultra-fast arpeggios, so instead of 16th notes (or 32th, depending on how you see it) it would just be 8th triplets. It's not really a live-friendly song the way it currently is, to be frank. (I also have issues with the recording or how some guitar lines sound like) But that's all the criticism I'm willing to share. It's still a cool return of the old members and I'm sure that the album will be successful!

Also because the band has a history of releasing tab books, and I bet they already have one lined up for the album, I won't be making one. I'd love to share one for you guys but with official tabs it's always an issue. So why not support the original artist.

Tone-wise I did have more issues than in my last pitch-shifted videos. But those videos didn't have too many lead lines. The shifting artifacts are quite noticable in those parts. I would've re-amped the song with a different tone if I did have more time. It sounded good on headphones but on monitors it's a bit messy. But it was a great recording tone for me personally.

Before any smart people in the comments want to say that some movements look too fast or my headphone cable, I am aware of that. Some of the position changes for the fast arpeggios have to be, well, fast. But my regular viewers know that I don't speed my videos up, right?

I hope you like it, it's far from perfect, but it's something höhö
