Heavy Snow in Athens - Feb. 2021 [4K]

This is the center of Athens, Greece from the night of Feb. 15 till noon of Feb. 16, 2021. The areas and approximate altitudes, as well as the time (EET) appear on the left side of the video. Accumulated snow: Up to 20-30 cm in central areas (~100-150 m), up to 40+ cm in elevated central areas (~250-350 m), more than 50-60 cm in the northern suburbs locally by the end of the snowfall.

Statistically, it snows ~4-6 days/year in central areas of Athens (depending on the area), but major snowfalls with snow accumulation, occur once every 2 years with a decline in frequency the last 2 decades possibly due to global warming.

The effect causing this snowfall is similar to the "lake effect snow" in US and it's called "Aegean sea effect snow" for obvious reasons, as the cold polar air passes over the Aegean sea and acquires humidity.
