I’ll start like that – the Xiaomi Seabird represents the best spent 90$ for an action camera. If I need to say upfront the random features I liked the most – the touch screen and the navigation, the countless shooting modes, including timewarp, and the phenomenal smartphone app. And the developers of the camera continue to update the firmaware even a few months after it was initially released.

The camera arrives in one of the smallest action-cam packages ever. That certainly looks like designed by Xiaomi package, but my poor Chinese language skills don’t let me understand the meaning of the text. I ordered the green one, there also are red and dark blue – this one is maybe the cutest – finally some fresh colors in the Actioncam world ruled by mostly black models and sometimes white or silver. The battery capacity is apparently 1050 Mah, but even this good capacity is not enough for guaranteeing shooting for a long time.
The hardware is decent – Hisilicon chipset, known for good performance, although not flagship, a Sony IMX sensor, which is offering good dynamic range and auto levels but known for adding more than usual amount of noise, even in daylight shooting. The field of view is 145 degrees, but I believe this value is when stabilization is on. MicroUSB for charging and PC connection, no micro HDMI though.
Resolution support goes up to 4K, with maximum bitrate of about 64Mbit. 1080p at 60FPS has the remarkable up to 52Mbit – and this is one of the action cameras with the highest bitrate in full HD. 720p is used in slow motion and us up to 120frames per second.
More interesting are the other shooting modes – I was pleasantly surprised to see time warp, which is certainly far away from Gopro in terms of stabilization, but makes the Seabird one of the very few cameras supporting this feature. Time lapse is also there, and we have a bunch of good photo modes.

The smartphone app – I like it much better even than the DJI Mimo, which is supposed to be developed by the much more experienced software team of DJI. I realize that it could sound unrealistic – but this is probably the best actioncam smartphone app I’ve ever used – and I have tested a lot of them. No freezing, no lag, all the camera config options are accessible – furthermore – they are grouped in a way which is easy to understand and access, and also – when I enable video mode – it automatically goes into landscape, which most of the other apps don’t do.

Let me talk about disadvantages: the most annoying one is the habit of Electronic image stabilization to be disabled as soon as you power off the camera. I was hoping to fix that with a new firmware, but it never happened. So hopefully if somebody from Seabird ever watches this video – please make the EIS On setting to be preserved after a reboot as it is on the other action cams and just like lens distortion correction can do.
Secondly – the microphone could have been better. You’ve heard some samples, and it seems to have a weird noise.
Thirdly – no accessories – the fix is linked in the description below the video, and – number four – most of the recordings have minor distortion within the first second of shooting – but no problems after that. Obviously none of these are too bad, and it took me a while to actually discover something negative to talk about!
