Where the Food Grows on the Water: Harvesting Wild Rice in Minnesota

This video shows how wild rice is harvested by canoe in the lakes and rivers of Northern Minnesota. Dave Wise of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (part of the USDA), and his brother (elder) Louis Wise from the Fond du Lac Reservation show how to harvest wild rice respectfully. And Ben Benoit went out on Bowstring River with his brother to harvest wild rice on the Leech Lake Reservation. This video also shows traditional Ojibwe methods for preparing wild rice. And Dave Wise explains how the NRCS has worked with the Ojibwe people in Fond du Lac to build flood control structures to help wild rice grow consistently on many lakes and rivers on the Reservation. Videography by Dan Balluff.
