A 50-Year Journey in Photography Without a Destination

Some 50 years ago when he was in his mid-teens, Robert Sinclair purchased his first 35mm SLR and shortly thereafter built a darkroom in the attic of his family’s house; he has had a camera and wet or digital darkrooms in his life ever since. Early on he made the conscious decision to not seek a career in photography, but instead, make photography a significant part of every aspect of his life. While he describes his photographic journey as being one without a destination, he has continued to challenge himself to improve his approach and the tools he uses.

Driven by his passion for making photographic images for his own enjoyment and that of others, Robert’s work has evolved to reflect his increasing attention to the quality of the image and its print output, and equally if not more so, the thought required to initiate the capture to begin with. About 20 years ago this progression caused him to expand his toolkit to medium format film and then digital equipment.

While not necessarily contemplated at the outset, the transition or expansion to medium format altered his overall considerations and approach to photography. Today he is as, if not more so, enthusiastic about making pictures as he was 50 years ago. But unlike then and throughout much of his journey, he now consciously makes fewer, generally limiting captures to those that help him improve his skills and understanding as to the equipment demands, but predominately to those that are a part of an idea or project he feels compelled to develop and produce. In short, today he thinks about why he is making an image long before he pushes the shutter release button, and if he can’t come up with a compelling reason to do so, the camera stays in the bag.

Because Robert has been practicing photography in earnest for 5 decades, this talk might be of interest to anyone wanting to hear one person’s perspective about how their considerations and approach to photography have changed over a significant length of time, and how the equipment interacted with or influenced those changes.
