‘Midtsommer’, (or midsummer in Norwegian) is a short film that tells the magic tale of nature and wildlife under the midnight Sun of northern Norway. After months of not being able to really shoot outside because of different reasons (health, no nighttime, gear issues), I have finally invested in a Sony a7sIII of my own, in addition to the Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS (and more!).
After testing the camera as rental this winter for documentary purposes, it was time to run some overdue tests on my own camera. I have only run low-light tests indoors so far, but here’s the result of some outdoors tests for documentary purposes. I wanted to look into the amazing capabilities of the camera when it comes to recording frame rate (4K 120 fps), incredibly vibrant color science (10 bit 4:2:2) and codec possibilities (so far only XAVC-HS, as I am waiting on my CF express A, V90 cards, and my Atomos Ninja V to be able to shoot in ProRes RAW 4K).
I have to say that I am extremely impressed by the sharpness, colors, contrast and capabilities of both the camera and the lens. The lens is extremely sharp for a non G-master lens, even wide open! Compiled with the Sony x2 extender, it remains very sharp and solid corner to corner. The very short focusing distance also allows great versatility (for some unexpected macro shots!). The camera is extremely versatile, practical and capable. Almost all the shots were recorded at 120fps 4K, XAVC-HS 10 bit 4:2:2, in S-Log3 + S-Gammut3.Cine at ISO 12800). If you wish to know more about what I used, why I used those and the results of the tests, I will be publishing a detailed post on my buymeacoffee page, available for my members only. (See link at the top).
In these sequences taken in Tromsø, Norway, you will find many small details if you have the eye for it, like dolphins for example! All content is of course copyrighted Night Lights Films (except for the sountracks, which most were licensed through EpidemicSound. 'Serenity of Nature' by Etienne Roussel, and 'In the caleidoscope' by Timothy Lewis), and no footage can be used in any way without the author’s permission.
