The US Postal System: Can it deliver? — with Trent Lott (1978) | ARCHIVES
October 12, 1978: The U.S. Postal System: Can It Deliver? is an AEI Public Policy Forum on one of the nation's largest and most important institutions, the U.S. Postal Service. Its detractors have criticized rising postage rates, deteriorating service, and substantial operating deficits. Its defenders, however, have emphasized the awesome difficulty of delivering hundreds of millions of pieces of mail each day and of providing services that are inherently unprofitable. Among the many issues discussed here are the pros and cons of: maintaining the postal service's legal monopoly on first-class mail, increasing the president's authority over postal service management, and allowing the postal service into electronic communications.
Panelists:
William F. Bolger — Postmaster General, US Postal Service
Henry Geller — asst secretary for communications and information, US Dept of Commerce
James J. LaPenta, Jr. — Secretary and Chief Negotiator of the Postal Service Negotiating Committee for the American Postal Workers Union
Trent Lott — Representative (R-MI)
Moderator:
John Charles Daly
Host:
Peter Hackes
