🪓 PREDATOR: PREY — The Brutal Return to Form (But Is It Flawed?) 🔥

📢 LISTEN UP, HUNTERS!
We are going back to the roots. Literally.

Set 300 years before the original Predator, Prey (2022) strips the franchise back to its bare essentials. No suburban chaos, no super-soldiers, no "upgrade" gimmicks. Instead, director Dan Trachtenberg takes us to the Great Plains of the Comanche Nation in 1719. We traded machine guns for tomahawks, and honestly? It might be the best thing that has happened to this series since Arnold Schwarzenegger covered himself in mud.

But does Prey deserve the crown as the best sequel in the franchise, or is the "Feral Predator" just another CGI mess waiting to be trapped? Here is my full spoiler breakdown of the hunt, the kills, and the controversy surrounding Naru and her canine companion, Sarii. 🐺

📖 THE PLOT (No Spoilers... Yet)
Naru (Amber Midthunder) is a young Comanche woman who desperately wants to be a hunter. The problem? Her tribe sees her as a healer. While the men track a mountain lion that has been terrorizing the camp, Naru follows her own instincts. She soon discovers that the lion isn't the top of the food chain.

A highly advanced, bipedal alien with thermal vision and a trophy case full of skulls has arrived to prove itself. As the bodies pile up—from wild animals to French trappers—Naru realizes she isn't just fighting for survival. She is fighting to prove that a "prey" can become a predator.

⚔️ THE GOOD: Why This Hunt Succeeds

The Setting: 18th-century Comanche Nation is gorgeous and terrifying. The wide open plains make the invisible threat feel even more claustrophobic.

Practical Violence: This is an R-rated bloodbath. The bear fight scene? The mud pit? The final duel with the flintlock pistol? The violence is visceral, fast, and shockingly creative.

Visual Storytelling: You don’t need to speak Comanche (or English, thanks to the full Comanche dub option!) to understand this film. The visual language is impeccable. Naru’s use of orange flowers to lower her body temperature is a brilliant callback to the 1987 original's "mud trick," while being scientifically unique.

The Dog Lives: Okay, spoiler alert for your anxiety—Sarii the dog survives. In a horror movie? We love to see it.

🤔 THE VERDICT: Is It Flawless?
Let’s address the elephant (or the Predator) in the room.

Is the Predator "weak"?
I’ve seen the criticisms: "The Predator got beaten by a 100lb girl and a dog." 🗣️
But here is the counter-argument: This is a Feral Predator. It is young. It is cocky. It is specifically hunting on a "hard mode" planet without its plasma caster. It relies on a shield, a spear, and a bolt-launcher.

My Take: It isn't weak; it's reckless. The moment Naru outsmarts the French trappers (the "Bad Bloods" of the human world), she proves that intelligence beats strength. The final fight, where she uses the Predator’s own helmet against it? That’s peak Predator franchise logic. Chekhov’s Gun (or in this case, Chekhov’s Laser Targeter) has never been better.

🎬 FINAL RATING: 8.5/10
Prey is a masterclass in franchise rehabilitation. You do not need to have seen the other Predator movies to love this (though the flintlock pistol easter egg for Predator 2 fans is chef's kiss 👨‍🍳).

It respects the lore of the Yautja (honor code, trophy taking, unwillingness to kill unarmed prey) while modernizing the action.

❓ QUESTIONS FOR THE COMMENTS:

Did you prefer the Comanche dub or the English version?

Who wins in a fight? Dutch (Arnold) or Naru?

Was the CGI on the animals (the bear/snakes) distracting, or is that just nitpicking?
