Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States (1977-1981). Historians look back at his presidency with mixed opinions: he lead during a time of stagflation, large-scale energy shortages, and a failed rescue attempt of American hostages in Iran (the hostages were later released after Carter's Secretary of State, Warren Christopher, negotiated their release). He was also a champion of human rights, including a negotiated peace between Israel and Egypt (The Camp David Accords) and was one of the first presidents to promote renewable energy, including installation of solar panels on the White House. Perhaps his most unique accomplishment was the fact that his administration did not wage war on any foreign country, making him the only modern president not to do so. He remains one of the most successful ex-presidents in American history, championing the rights of the poor and attempting to eradicate various parasitic illnesses, including the elimination of 99% of new Guinea Worm Disease cases (from an estimated 3.5 million in 1986 to 148 reported cases in 2013) through his non-profit, The Carter Center.
