2021 Census ASL

Hello everyone, I hope you are all keeping healthy.

The Federal Government has recently sent out the 2021 Census forms. This is what the form looks like.

When and if you received this, do not throw it out. Federal law makes it mandatory that every household reply to the Census on line.

When you open the notification, you will see that there is a secure access code. I will explain how to use that later on in the video.

The purpose of the census is for the Federal Government to collect all kinds of information about Canadians. They use the information for planning things such as upcoming budgets.

You will need to access the internet on a computer, phone or some other device. The website address is www.census.gc.ca The screen that will show up looks like this.

Before you start the questionnaire, I’d like to draw your attention to the line below “Start Questionnaire” that says “Alternate Format”.

When you click on the Alternate Format link, you will see, “Help is available for people who are deaf or are hard of hearing” and a link that says video in sign language. There is a deaf person who uses ASL to sign the interpretation of the Census. You can use that video to clarify any English component in the survey. Your answers need to go in the English document, you are not able to enter answers on the ASL version.

When signing on to the Census page, most Canadians will get the shorter survey. The ASL version/explanation is 24 minutes long. Some people will be asked to fill out the longer, more detailed survey. The ASL version that you can refer to for clarification is an hour and a half.

Now, getting back to starting the questionnaire. Once you click on the button, it will ask for your secure access code. To remind you, that is the long number at the top of the paper that you received in the mail from Statistics Canada.

You will need to copy that access number onto the website in the text box. That will start the process of the Census. You will need to answer each of the questions.

The questionnaire must be completed by May 11th, 2021. It is now up to you to make sure that you complete the questions on time.
