They Moved Mountains to Build Mumbai's Airport — Now Engineers Are Panicking

India is building one of the most ambitious aviation megaprojects in the world — the Navi Mumbai International Airport. But to make this massive airport possible, engineers had to completely reshape the landscape around Mumbai.

Entire hills were flattened, millions of tons of earth were moved, and even part of the Ulwe River was diverted to create stable land for the airport’s runways and terminals.

Why go to such extremes?

The existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport is already one of the busiest airports in the world and has almost no room left to expand. With air travel in India growing rapidly, a second airport became essential.

That’s where Navi Mumbai International Airport comes in.

This new megaproject is designed to eventually handle up to 90 million passengers per year, making it one of the largest airports in India and a key hub for the country’s future aviation growth.

But building an airport on reclaimed and reshaped land brings serious challenges. Engineers must deal with unstable ground conditions, flooding risks during monsoon seasons, and the massive complexity of constructing aviation infrastructure at this scale.

In this video, we explore:

• Why Mumbai needed a second airport
• How engineers flattened mountains to build it
• The massive earthworks behind the project
• Why a river had to be redirected
• And why some experts are now concerned about the engineering risks

This is the story behind one of the most extreme airport construction projects in modern aviation.
