Israel to allow 'basic amount of food' into Gaza amid famine risk

Amid weeks of warnings from aid agencies that Gaza is on the brink of famine, Israel says it will ease its aid blockade and let a “basic amount of food” into the enclave.

The United Nations said last week there was no longer fresh fruit or vegetables available in Gaza, and stocks of canned goods were dwindling.

Most of Gaza’s community kitchens have closed, and those that remain open are facing stampedes of residents desperate for food.
