As the Philippines transitions from the cool, dry season into the warmer months

As the Philippines transitions from the cool, dry season into the warmer months, health authorities are observing a rise in certain illnesses commonly associated with this period. Notably, while influenza-like illnesses have seen a decline, other health concerns remain prevalent.

Influenza-Like Illnesses Decline

In 2024, the Department of Health (DoH) reported a 17% decrease in influenza-like illnesses, with 179,227 cases compared to the previous year. This reduction is attributed to improved health practices and better preparation by the health sector. Influenza-like diseases, characterized by coughs, colds, and fever, are commonly caused by respiratory viruses such as rhinovirus, enterovirus, and influenza A.

Preventive Measures

Health officials emphasize the importance of preventive measures to combat these illnesses:

Vaccination: Staying updated with recommended vaccines can prevent diseases like influenza and typhoid fever.

Mosquito Control: Using insect repellent, installing screens, and eliminating standing water can reduce the risk of dengue fever.

Hygiene Practices: Regular handwashing and ensuring safe food and water consumption are vital to prevent respiratory and gastrointestinal infections.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and proactive in maintaining health, especially during seasonal transitions when certain illnesses become more prevalent.
