'Trump Has Lost The War Against Iran'

A reported draft memorandum between the United States and Iran, emerging after a month of negotiations, could mark one of the most consequential strategic reversals in West Asia in recent years. According to details published by Iran's Mehr News Agency, the proposed understanding contains provisions that appear to grant Tehran many of its key demands while offering Washington a pathway to end a costly and politically damaging confrontation.

Among the reported provisions are a permanent ceasefire across multiple fronts, including Lebanon, a US commitment not to interfere in Iran's internal affairs, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and negotiations on Iran's nuclear programme without additional military pressure. If implemented in their reported form, these measures would represent significant concessions by Washington and could fundamentally alter the regional balance of power.

BharatShakti Group Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale argues that the terms suggest Iran has emerged as the political winner despite suffering extensive military and economic damage during the conflict. Tehran's ability to withstand pressure from both the United States and Israel while preserving core strategic interests has strengthened its standing and may reinforce its claim to regional influence.

For the United States, the agreement appears aimed at limiting further economic and political costs. Rising energy prices, domestic political pressures and the approach of midterm elections may have narrowed Washington's options, forcing the Trump administration to prioritise de-escalation over strategic gains.

The implications for Israel remain uncertain. While the ceasefire may offer temporary respite, unresolved issues involving Hezbollah and Iran's long-term regional ambitions suggest that deeper tensions remain intact. The agreement may therefore represent a pause in hostilities rather than a durable settlement.

The negotiations also highlight the growing diplomatic influence of Qatar, which appears to have played a decisive role in securing the breakthrough, overshadowing Pakistan's more limited contribution.

For India, the reported opening of the Strait of Hormuz would bring immediate relief by reducing risks to critical energy supplies. However, New Delhi may also need to reassess its broader West Asia strategy, including its relationships with Iran, Israel and the Gulf states, while accelerating efforts to diversify energy imports.

The larger strategic takeaway may be that Iran, despite its setbacks, has emerged as a more influential regional power—one whose role the United States, Europe, Israel and India will increasingly have to reckon with.
