Rising above the vast Great Plains of the northern United States, the Black Hills is a small mountain region full of lush ponderosa pine trees and tall granite mountains. The Lakota tribe called this region pahá sápa, or “hills that are black”, referring to how the trees on the mountains cause them to appear “black”, and was a sacred land. As civilization progressed, the early 1900’s saw the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad construct a line that ran between the towns of Hills City and Keystone. A little more than half a century later, this line would become one of the first tourist railroads in the United States, and at one point ran as a dual gauge line, with ex-White Pass & Yukon #69 finding another life in service on heavy grades. Today, the line has been converted solely to standard gauge, and articulated “Mallet” locomotives have become the primary motive power. One of two such engines on this line is ex-Wayerhaeuser Timber 2-6-6-2T #110, and has been a reliable workhorse for hauling longer passenger trains up the 4-6% grades of the Keystone Branch. Over 100,000 riders travel to the region to ride the line annually, and the railroad is an important boost to the tourism industry in the Black Hills.
