The effective treatment of childhood constipation according to NICE guidelines.

The paediatric gastroenterology nurses, who run the childhood constipation clinic, have produced a short educational film that illustrates how to manage childhood constipation along the lines of the NICE Guidelines.

A prospective audit of 50 consecutive new referrals to the clinic showed children were repeatedly not managed appropriately; management was often inappropriate and inadequate, resulting in children needing longer episodes of care. The clinic currently has a 5 month waiting list.
We would urge everybody who treats children with constipation to spend 4 minutes watching this film.
