Dyepot Weekly #32 - Dyeing Yarn with Avocado Pits and Skins

Let's dye 100% cotton and 100% wool yarn http://shrsl.com/s195 with Avocado pits and skins! (KnitPicks Affiliate Link) I am frequently asked whether I have tried dyeing yarn with Avocado, and I finally needed to give it a try! In this experiment, I wll dye mini skines of 100% cotton and 100% wool yarns in different combinations of avocado pits and skins. I did not use any mordants in this video, I wanted to see what kind of colors we could get from just the avocado organic matter. Enjoy!

[0:17] What is going in each pot. (Pot 1: 6 avocado pits 200 g, Pot 2: 3 avocado pits ~100 g and 70 g skins, Pot 3: 150 g avocado skins
[1:10] Setting up the dyepots, 8 cups of water + the avocado parts shown above. I added the pits whole and tore the skins into some smaller pieces
[3:49] 10 min into heating, we start to see some color!
[4:54] Preparing the yarns. 3- 23 g miniskeins of 100% cotton and 3 - 34 g miniskeins of 100% wool. I presoaked the yarn for 30+ min in plain tap water
[5:13] After simmering for 1 h - checking in on the colors. Add 1 cup warm tap water to each dyebath to increase the volume. Let them simmer for 30 more min.
[6:42] After 1.5 hours total. Straining the organic matter out of the dyebaths
[10:31] adding the presoaked yarn.
[13:16] After 30 min hour of heating the yarn with the dyes
[14:08] Turning off the heat after 1 hour total
[15:18] The next morning
[16:55] Washing Pot #1 (just avocado pits)
[19:42] Washing pot #2 (avocado pits & Skins)
[21:42] Washing Pot #3 (just avocado skins)
[23:35] Finished dried yarns and conclusions
